 Current Students

The Senior Honors Program is a departmental honors program designed to provide students with the opportunity to conduct an original independent research project. This program is especially recommended for students planning to pursue a career in scientific research. Students in this program will be expected to devote much of their junior and senior year to the design and completion of the project. Students are encouraged to apply for various undergraduate fellowships through the UCSB Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) to help defray the expenses of their projects.

Eligibility

  • Students must have the support of an EEMB faculty member or an MCDB faculty member
  • Eligible to enroll in independent studies' courses (MCDB 199, EEMB 199-see the UCSB General Catalog)
  • Completed at least 105 total units toward graduation
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better overall, in the major, and within all upper division major courses (exclusive of grades earned in 197 and 199)

Applications are available in the Undergraduate Advising Office at the beginning of Fall quarter and are due by the end of Fall quarter. Once a student's application has been approved, he or she will be given a special library card with privileges equivalent to those given to graduate students. During the spring quarter of the student's senior year, faculty sponsors will be asked to evaluate each student's progress and to recommend those students whose work deserves the recognition of Distinction in the Major. Students successfully completing the program will have the award "with distinction in the major" noted on their official transcripts and diploma.

 Senior Awards

Each year the UCSB biology undergraduate program recognizes outstanding achievements of upper division students and graduating seniors in the Biological Sciences.

 Application Deadline

Submit all application materials by the end of Fall Quarter.
